Popularity does matter in this world (sadly) and I can tell you first hand that if you are using a generic theme for your business website, that switching to a more professional theme that has proven to be popular can improve your business. I know first hand. For a long time I was using the Thesis theme for this site. And it really made this site look more like a blog than a business. So I decided to change that once I found a theme on TF that I liked. I chose the display theme and decided I should at least test it out. Well it turns out that people really liked the way my site looked after that because I received a lot more leads than I normaly did. So doing something as simple as changing my sites wordpress theme improved my business. Of course changing themes is pretty simple if you know how to do it, but overal you're changing your entire look… so the implications go a lot deeper than just switching your theme.
