This collection contains a whole pile of themes released over the past year. You can see a growing trend that has emerged in photography themes. Theme designers are really looking to showcase a photographer’s work so there’s a huge number of full screen portfolio themes that focus on the work 100%. It’s great to see that theme designers are sensitive to the needs of photographers and are adapting their themes accordingly.

Responsive design has really taken off over the last year as well. Designers can use responsive design techniques to create fluid images, meaning that your photographs can look beautiful on any device. A number of the themes listed below use responsive design for beautiful image resizing.

There are some plugins that turbo-charge any WordPress installation, taking it from blogging platform to powerful CMS. They enhance WordPress, making it faster and more powerful. Chances are that your competitors are using these plugins so maybe its time that you thought about using them too.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization is an essential part of getting your site ranked on Google. The great thing about WordPress is that it’s already pretty good for SEO out-of-the-box (according to Matt Cutts, Google’s Head of Web Spam) But you can improve it further by installing a plugin that fine tunes your SEO. All-in-One SEO is a great choice that has enough options to juice up the SEO of the average WordPress user.

Analytics

Every webmaster knows that to develop your site you need to know who’s visiting, when they’re visiting, where they’re visiting and how they’re finding your site. Google Analytics is the best free tool for tracking your sites analytics. Google provides a tracking code that you can insert in the tags of your theme. However, if you change your WordPress theme the tracking code will disappear. By using a plugin like Google Analytics for WordPress the tracking code is no longer held in the theme and you won’t be in danger of your stats disappearing.

Cache

When you cache your website information is stored as a static file and served up to each website visitor. This means that your website isn’t having to reload all of the information from your database each time someone lands. Caching is the best way to speed up your website, and is particularly useful for photographers, who often have image-heavy websites which cause slow load times. A good choice is WP Super Cache.

Backups

Backing up your site is an important part of being a webmaster. You never know when your server could expire, your database corrupted or your site hacked. It’s worth making regular backups of both your site and your WordPress database. A great option for this is ManageWP. ManageWP is a service which manages your WordPress sites. It has built in backup to Amazon S3 as well as Dropbox. Currently it is in beta so is still free, but after launching at the end of November it will remain free for users with 3 sites or less.

Mobile

The world has gone mobile. More people are now accessing the internet through mobile devices than ever before. In fact, we’ve reached a point where more people are surfing the web on mobiles than on computers. You need to make sure that you’re in on the game and a great way to do this is to install a mobile switcher like WP Touch Pro (or the free version). This detects what device your site’s visitor is using and serves them up a version of the site that is suitable.

Contact Form

Contact forms are useful for letting people get in touch with you. Gravity Forms does that but it takes forms to the nth degree. You can use Gravity Forms for any sort of form building and all of the data is stored on your website’s database. It makes it easy to collect data, and to look at it later.

Social Connection

Sharing is the cornerstone of Web 2.0 – these days it’s what drives the internet. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Reddit, the list goes on and on. People are connected in ways they never have been before. Sharing is the perfect way for you to spread your photography amongst people who haven’t seen it before. Installing a plugin like ShareThis makes it easy for people to share your photography without you having to do any work at all.

Notifications

Hello bar is a notifications bar that pops up at the top of your page. It lets you add simple notification messages at the top of your page. Unlike pop-ups these bars are helpful and unobtrusive, letting you grab visitors’ attention with a call to action, without annoying them in the process. Hello bar is a commercial plugin but it comes packed full of useful features like analytics and A/B Testing.

Ecommerce

Selling photographs through your website can be a great way to supplement your income. This is possible by extending WordPress with one of the many eCommerce plugins. By installing a plugin like WP E-commerce you can sell your photographs from your site. WP eCommerce is a free shopping cart plugin that you can use to sell photographs, including digital downloads so you can sell high-resolution versions of your images – no printing required!

Spam

Spam is the scourge of every WordPress website. As a webmaster you can get endless comments asking you to buy some prescription pills or visit a casino site. Akismet fights spam. It uses an API key which you can get from WordPress.com. It is free for non-commercial use and there is a fee for commercial users. It’s a life-saer though when it comes to the battle against spammers.

Gravity Forms takes the cake when it comes to WordPress contact form plugins. It’s a paid plug-in with features such as in line html content, import/export forms, conditional form fields, email notification routing, enhanced custom fields, validation for multiple forms, form scheduling, limit form entries, post image field, post category field, integrate with other forms using hooks, visual form editor and many more features.

Gravity Forms is the only form plugin I use and recommend others use.  It’s super easy to use and advanced.  You can build complex forms easily by dragging and dropping form functions ajax-style, so it literally takes a minute to build a form.

Features I really like:

Schedule Forms - Only want a form available for a limited period of time? Set a start and end date to limit form access and display a custom message when the form has expired.

Pricing Fields – Gravity Forms makes it’s easy to create order forms. Order forms can incorporate pricing specific fields to allow your users to make selections and generate a total based on product and option selections.

Form Builder – Quickly build and design your WordPress forms using the form editor. Select your fields, configure your options, and easily embed forms on your WordPress powered site using the built in tools.

Another reason I use Gravity Forms is because it saves every form submission inside your wp database so you can easily access and answer every query.

Manages multiple contact forms. Form and mail has a flexible layout for easy customization with simple markup. Supports Ajax-powered submitting, CAPTCHA, Akismet spam filtering and more.

Clean-Contact

Simple contact form option. Advanced spam bot protection, out-of-the-box install, short code support, no external Javascript libraries required, supports custom styling using CSS, multi-language.

ONW Simple Contact Form

Simple form that can be added to any page or post through the editor or short code. Non-customizable form, though appearance can be altered using CSS. reCAPTCHA integration possible. Also supports use with multiple sites.

Scaleable Contact Form

Highly customizable. Uses CAPTCHA. Required and non-required fields can be configured. 5 different field types, all labels and buttons can be modified, optional confirmation-mail to user. Can be used as a regular send form or Ajax driven.

SimpleModal Contact Form (SMCF)

Ajax-powered modal contact form. Utilizes the jQuery library and the SimpleModal jQuery plug-in. Has options to include certain form elements such as subject field and sending a copy to the user.

FormBuilder

This plug-in allows you to build complex forms in the admin interface without needing to know PHP or HTML. Features premade forms for quick setup, forms can be placed anywhere, multiple forms on one page, split forms into multiple pages, personalized auto-responses, built-in anti spam and much more.

ContactBuddy

Add a simple contact form to widgets, posts and pages. Contains the following fields: name, email, subject, message. A reCAPTCHA validator can be added. Submissions sent to any email specified by the administrator of the site.

Contact WP

This plug-in is very easy to use, and lets you create a simple feedback submission form that is secure, quick and easy for any user to use. Multiple text fields are generated, which can be edited from the admin panel. Extra fields are easy to add.

MM Forms Pro

Comes as both free and Pro version. Some features include: set number of submissions, limit who can see it, make time-limited forms, redirect after submissions, multiple forms, CAPTCHA, send HTML formatted emails and much more.

Grunion Contact Form

Add a contact form to any widget, post or page. Choose which emails forms are being sent to.

TDO Mini Forms

Add highly customizable forms that allow non-registered and/or registered users to submit and edit posts and pages. It’s easy to keep any new posts as drafts and edits as revisions until approved by admin (customizable). Many settings and options available.

Formidable Forms

It’s quick and easy to build forms with the drag and drop interface and in-place editing. Make your own custom forms or use one of the templates. You can also use short codes and spam catching services if wanted.

Contact Form (by contactme.com)

Contact form and button. Part of an online suite with many more tools. Features include: custom fields (text, dropdown menus, radio buttons, checkboxes and more), editable through your admin panel, include your logo/contact info or social links on the form, many languages supported and more.

Popularity does matter in this world (sadly) and I can tell you first hand that if you are using a generic theme for your business website, that switching to a more professional theme that has proven to be popular can improve your business. I know first hand. For a long time I was using the Thesis theme for this site. And it really made this site look more like a blog than a business. So I decided to change that once I found a theme on TF that I liked. I chose the display theme and decided I should at least test it out. Well it turns out that people really liked the way my site looked after that because I received a lot more leads than I normaly did. So doing something as simple as changing my sites wordpress theme improved my business. Of course changing themes is pretty simple if you know how to do it, but overal you’re changing your entire look… so the implications go a lot deeper than just switching your theme.
