Search Engine Optimization - Web Design, SEO

Is Google Updating Faster Then Ever?

Posted by | Uncategorized | 2 Comments

The normal title I use for this site is “web design and SEO” which I’ve been using for quite some time now. I decided to change the title to “website design and internet marketing” earlier today… about 8 hours ago. Previous to that my title was “web design and SEO” but now just 8 hours later my new title is already showing up in Googles results. This is astonishing to me. They have already indexed my site and have updated their search results to include my new title.

This is the fastest I’ve ever seen Google update. Maybe Google is speeding up it’s indexing process. A few years back Google would update it’s complete index in about a month but in the last couple of years it has taken months to update. I’m talking about 3 – 6 months before their search results updated and then the pagerank would update.

Maybe they are moving back to a quicker updating process? Maybe all the fuss over this last pagerank update has made them change their ways? If I were Google I’d definitely speed up the indexing and ranking process since so many changes occur on a day-to-day basis. They don’t want to lose their followers.

Google Pagerank Update Pissing Off Lots Of People

Posted by | General | 4 Comments

So Google updated it’s pagerank about a week and a half ago and a lot of people are pissed to the point where they are taking action against Google. I mean to the point where they are disallowing the googlebot to even index their sites. Vlad is one of them. He’s using disallow now in his robots.txt file to basically tell the Googlebot to keep right on moving as it hits his site. His pagerank went from a 4 to a 0 in this last update and I can totally understand being upset.

I don’t think disallowing the Googlebot to index his site is the smartest move even though he probably feels like it’s the only thing he can do to get back at them. In reality it is only hurting him further. When you live in a country you are governed by it’s laws and you have to follow all of them or else you face the consequences and that is true for the web. We are living under Google’s rule and we have to act accordingly or else we get our wrists(sites) slapped.

But you say,, Google doesn’t tell us all the rules so how are we supposed to know?

Well when you’ve been online long enough studying Google, optimizing for Google, you know exactly what they want. It’s the reason they went public. They are after all a business who has to please their shareholders. A corporation must continue to see increasing profits or it is dieing.

If they make it difficult to rank in their results pages it’s partly due to them wanting you to use their adwords service which anyone can pay for and immediately rank #1 if you pay them enough per click. Of course they want to keep their search results relevant because that’s how they gathered their following to begin with, but it’s not that important anymore. They know they have enough people who will gladly pay them for those positions they could make the entire top ten results ads and people would still use them for search.

What they don’t want is webmasters or SEO’s manipulating their SERPS even though they created search engine optimization with the advent of their toolbar which displayed a websites Pagerank which is a visual indicator of how popular a website is. With Pagerank webmasters could visually see how supposedly popular their sites were and everyone was soon in a rush to increase it by getting as many backlinks as possible. That even meant buying text links for the sole purpose of increasing the flow of Pagerank to their website thus boosting their PR.

Buying text links is artificially increasing your link popularity. It’s why businesses like text-link-ads.com and linkworth.com exist. It’s also why businesses like payperpost cropped up. Pay a fee and you can get links to your site. Google does not like this as it’s not natural linking but paid. And they aren’t the ones getting paid. They make zero money when you rank #1 in their SERPS naturally.

Google’s known about people buying massive text links for years now so that’s nothing new. First the sites buying text links were penalized. If all the sudden you had 50k new backlinks coming from 2 main sites they could easily tell. But now it seems like they might be going after the sites selling text links. Either way you should be careful about buying and selling text links. I don’t think it will go away because links are still the most important thing in SEO. SEO’s have always been smart on how to get around the actions of search engines to thwart their activities so new methods of flying under the radar will be invented.

When I saw Vlad’s post about losing his pagerank I commented on what I think is the reason for his sites PR demise. Now I only speculated about this because I don’t know his SEO strategies if any but what I could tell is that he like many other bloggers link out way too much on their blogs. You know, including every widget available and freely linking out to blogs, affiliate programs, text link advertisers etc. Affiliate marketers who blog and bloggers in general seem to be more prone to this. After all it is very easy to add widgets to your wordpress blog. It’s also enticing to be a member of every site offering a widget that will display your blogs visitors such as mybloglog.

I don’t recommend using using these types of widgets. Especially not 3 or 4 and I think it’s best to keep your ads hidden. Meaning hide your affiliate links using javascript. I think Google will penalize more site owners if all it looks like they are doing is promoting affiliate programs and that is how a lot of bloggers earn their money. That and via selling text links. Including a section titled “sponsors”, “text links” or “advertisers” is coming to an end, especially if the links are in an ordered list and have zero description. You need to remove any consistencies with your site that Google sees in other sites that seem to be trying to manipulate their SERPS. That also means removing your links pages or even link directories on your site.

If you’ve seen a loss or increase in Pagerank I’d love to hear about it. This site has stayed the same through the update.

Andy Beard wrote a good post about Pagerank you can read. He also talks about the recent Pagerank update and how it’s upset a lot of people.

Do It Yourself SEO. On Page Website Optimization for Higher Search Rankings

Posted by | Uncategorized | One Comment

If you are the Do It Yourself type you’ll be interested in what Top 5 On Page factors affect your search engine rankings.

On Page optimization includes anything directly in your html that you can change to boost your search engine rankings.

The Top 5 On Page SEO Factors

Title Tag

Your title tags are super important and the easiest to change. The titles of your web pages appear in the search engine rankings. They are what people searching see first are a large part of where the Search Engines rank your site.

Titles should be an exact keyword or phrase people use to search for. If you match this up perfectly your chances for ranking for that phrase are better then say if you water your titles down, filling them up with related keywords in hopes of showing up for multiple keywords for the same page. Stay Focused!

Your titles should be different for every single webpage. Every page should be laser targeted to one keyword or key phrase.

H Tags

H tags are those that separate your content into a hierarchical structure. The h1 tag is the most important. It’s basically your headline tag. Just like your title tag it tells the search engines what your page is about. Again it should include a keyword/keyphrase that is searched by people every day. Don’t just guess.

Then you can consider every other H tag to be your subheadlines. This is how your content should be set up.

Title – <– this is the title or headline of your page. It uses the h1 tag
Intro paragraph(s) <– this is where you introduce your article, draw people in etc.
Subheading <– go further into detail, this is your subheadline. It uses the h2 tag
Sub paragraph
H3 tag
Sub paragraph
H4 tag
etc.

Quality Content! (Then Keyword Density)

Your copy counts! Don’t fill it up with keywords just to rank higher in the SERPS! Write good copy and you’re visitors will thank you. If you’re writing about an exact topic your copy should be filled with supporting keywords, enough that your page does not have to be checked for keyword density.

If you do want to write search engine optimized copy then sprinkle the keyword you are optimizing for throughout your page. It’s ok to vary it up. The keyword “seo web design” can easily be replaced with “web design and seo” and you’re safe. Or even mentioning them separetly is good.

It should be in the Title of the page, the H1 tag, mentioned in the first paragraph and possible used in an h2 or h3 tag, then mentioned in the last paragraph.

Link Structure

This is about how you link your pages together. It’s the same as site structure and includes “deep linking” or linking to sub pages of your site.

Your website should be separated into sections (if you’re content warrants it) or categories, or tags, or silos. Whatever you want to call it you basically want to break your content down into related sections.

Each main section is linked from every single page, and the sub pages are linked together only by each other. If you want to increase the inner links to a page then you can put a link to that page from every page. This will boost the backlinks to that page and thus boost it’s rankings in the SERPS. Yes, your own pages count towards your subpages backlinks.

When you link to your subpages you should use link text that uses keywords that best describe that page. If possible you should use the pages exact title (if it’s optimized) as the link text. So if you have a page titled “affordable web hosting, Los Angeles” any links pointing to that page should have the link text “affordable web hosting, LA” or “LA web hosting” or some variation using the same keywords.

Never use generic link text!

Tags, Tags, Tags

(alt, <strong>, <em>, )

Using proper tags in your html is something you have to do. It helps with making your site accessible, more readable and it’s simply required if you want to rank on the first page of any search engine.

Alt tag <– the text that appears when your image is hovered over or is missing. It helps both visitors and search engines tell what your image is about. You can use long descriptions in your alt tags. It’s also good to use your pages main keyword somewhere in the tag.

<strong> The bold tag should be used when necessary, not just to highlight keywords. Use it right and you can help your readers pull out text from your copy and also support what your page is about. The underline and italic tag should be used in the same way.

Of course there are more then 5 rules to follow!

The 5 things mentioned above are the most important but there are others that can affect your rankings. Such as:

Meta Description – When search engines spider your site, they will either grab your meta description or the first couple sentences of your content to use in their result pages. You can control your meta tags easily and make them focused by optimizing them. Use them to control what searchers see in the serps. They should grab people’s attention! Think of your description as a sub headline.

HTML or CSS – CSS is just plain better to use. It separates your content from your design, meaning there is far less code on your pages, meaning your content is easier to spider. If you’re site isn’t using a completely CSS based layout you are probably losing in search to others that do.

Use of Javascript or Flash – If you are using fancy javascript menus, flash movies and other dynamic content you’re basically hiding your media from the search engines. If you do use dynamic content be sure to describe it with plain text on the page. If you have a photo slideshow displaying housing in Florida you should describe it exactly under the media. This way the search engines know what you are displaying.

So that’s a quick run down of the top 5 On-page seo factors. They are all things you can tweak on your pages to help them rank higher in the serps. A lot of SEO is testing and you should be testing. One simple change can bump you from page 3 to page 1 in a month. I’ve had it happen to me and it pays to test.

Article Marketing – Article Submitter – Article Submission

Posted by | General | 2 Comments

Article Submitter Are you writing articles and submitting them to article directories in hopes they (your links) get picked up by webmasters and search engines? Have you paid for article submission services? Have you ever wanted to submit your articles to a bunch of article sites for free?

Check out Article Submitter, another piece of SEO/Marketing software from Brad Callen, the maker of SEO Elite.

Freely submit your articles to 85 of the top article sites. 85? Yes, 85… I didn’t even know 85 article sites existed… let alone 660 which is what you can upgrade to if you want.. not sure who would want to though. Even though the software makes it easier for you to submit to article directories it doesn’t do it automatically.

You still have to sign up for those 660 article directories and submit your site by hand. Article Submitter makes it a bit easier by autofilling a lot of your info on submission, but 660,, that’s a lot of article sites to submit to! Again something you might want to consider outsourcing. I think 85 article directories is enough to submit to but that’s just me. Of course 660 is more coverage and you might very well get links solely from the article directories themselves. Check it out if you are doing article marketing for SEO purposes.

Directory Submission – Directory Submitter

Posted by | General | 6 Comments

Directory Submitter Ahh the good ol’ directory submission services out there. Charging a hundred dollars to submit your link to 100, 200, 250, 300, 350 of the top directory sites around. Directories can be a good way to get your site some one way backlinks but having another company do it can be costly and you might not be aware of what you’re getting. If you have the time to submit your site you should do it yourself. If you have the time and you’re new to SEO submitting your site to directories is a given.

You can find a lot of cheap directory submission services out there or you can do it yourseslf. When you do it yourself you can submit your site only to directories you see fit.

A great product that Brad Callen just released is Directory Submitter. A piece of software that runs on your desktop that allows you to submit your site to hundreds of directories all from one interface. Directory Submitter has 350 directories in it’s list that you can submit to for free. 350 directories is a lot for free. If you want you can upgrade the demo software to submit your site to thousands of directories. Thousands of directories might be pushin it though as that seems like an awful lot of directories to hand submit sites to.

You can use the software for free and submit your site to 350 directories though without having to pay a dime. Great isn’t it.

Want your site submitted to those 350 directories without doing it yourself? Outsource it. Ask someone on scriptlance.com or guru.com to hand submit your site to those 350 directories using the software. You might be able to get someone to do it for cheaper then a directory submission service.

Social Poster – Post to Multiple Social Bookmarking Sites at Once

Posted by | Social Networking | 3 Comments

Social Poster Social bookmarking is big in SEO and if you aren’t spamming the social bookmark sites with your links then your missing out! Haha! But seriously SEO’s are using social bookmarking to secretly bookmark their own sites along with real sites of course. This gives you a little more exposure and might even bring in some leads. It might even bring in some links… Links with Pagerank oh my!

Don’t spend your time bookmarking sites seperately onto each of the social bookmarking sites you are a member of… Go here to Social Poster and post your links once to multiple bookmarking sites. 38 sites in fact. Social Poster gives you a convenient Bookmarklet to use in Firefox to easily get to.

Bookmarking your own sites definetely doesn’t hurt in SEO. I actually recommend bookmarking your own sites once in awhile. Hell you spend all your time bookmarking everyone elses sites so why not yours right?

If you do SEO yourself for your own sites you are more then likely already doing this. If not you should start. Seriously. Don’t go bookmarking every page of your site though. You want to be under the radar a little bit. There’s nothing wrong with it. Go on.. Bookmark. See what happens.

Search Traffic from Long Tail Keywords

Posted by | Uncategorized | 4 Comments

Most web traffic comes from people searching long tail keywords or key phrases. When people search google they usually type in more then 2 keywords looking for specific information. You can see how people find your site by going over to Hittail and signing up, put your info in and sit back and see in real time your visitors and what term they used to find your site. Hittail will then give you suggestions on other long tail keywords to use to build more pages, edit your current ones or what else to blog about. Here is what’s on their What Is It page.

“HitTail reveals in real-time the least utilized, most promising keywords hidden in the Long Tail of your natural search results. We present these terms to you as suggestions that when acted on can boost the natural search results of your site. It’s that simple.”

So for this site it shows me this as an overview. You can see the majority of my traffic comes from the long tail.
Top Ten Keywords are 11.9% of your search traffic.
Long Tail Keywords are 88.1% of your search traffic.
Total unique keywords collected: 895

You can use this tool to fine tune your SEO project and if nothing else see how people are finding your website. It seems to work great and you need a little time with it, maybe a month or two to really see a good overview of your where your traffic is coming from. They also have a forum if you need any help or explanations.

Google Pagerank Update – Complete?

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

So I first saw Google updating it’s pagerank and posted about it on the 19th of Sept. That was more then a month ago and now it looks like the dust is finally settling. For the past month I’ve seen my sites go back and forth between the old pagerank and the new so I’ve been keeping track and watching the #’s over at http://livepr.raketforskning.com (which by the way I’ve never understood what that domain name says). What is raketforskning anway? Anywho, I’ve noticed this site jumped up to a 5 which is nice since it used to be a PR3 with subpages ranked PR4 which makes absolutely no sense. So basically it looks like things are settling (fingers crossed) and it’s time to move onto the work for the next update.

I need some good links to get this site to a PR6 and I’ve thought the one good way to do that is to give away css templates or wordpress themes because we all know that when you give, you receive. So, to push this site upward I need to start giving stuff away. This site also needs a theme redesign, which probably won’t happen for awhile since I’m super busy. We’ll see how it goes.

Update Feb 7th..

Looks like Google is still dancing around,, I don’t quite understand it. Not sure if others are seeing this as well but if you do please share your thoughts or what you’re seeing. Basically Google’s pagerank is jumping around back and forth and it makes no sense.

Google updating it’s pagerank?

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Well I just saw the first signs that google is updating it’s pagerank. A new site I started awhile back is now displaying a pagerank of 4. It was a zero before that. It looks like google is getting ready for it’s next pagerank update. There updates usually take a few weeks to a month to settle into their new places. This is good though because it’s been so damn long. I remember when they use to update monthly now it takes forever. I wonder what the purpose of them updating quarterly is? Is there some benefit to it or does it just take them longer to parse through all the information. The world may never know.

Gaining One-Way Inbound Links Through Link Exchanges

Posted by | Uncategorized | One Comment

In the old days webmasters could freely exchange links with other webmasters without worrying about being penalized by search engines. In the old days I mean 2005 and earlier. Things change quickly on the web and the search engines are catching on faster and faster to webmasters trying to artificially boost their search engine rankings.

Old fashioned link exchanges consisted of 2 webmasters placing the others link on their site usually on a designated links page sometimes consisting of tens of hundreds of pages. The idea was to gather as many link partners as possible in hopes of boosting Pagerank and in turn increasing their rankings in the search engine result pages. It didn’t matter if webmasters traded links with site owners who had sites completely unrelated to theirs because in the beginning it didn’t matter. The more incoming or inbound links you had the better.

More and more webmasters caught onto this fact as the term SEO or Search Engine Optimization became popular. The web became saturated with links pages and the search engines caught on. Search engines like Google essentially want their results to be as accurate as possible because it is their livelihood so they began changing their algorithms to factor in such activity amongst webmasters. With some major search engine updates webmasters and SEO marketers soon figured out that incoming links from related sites were better then from unrelated ones. So they continued exchanging links but now with related sites only.

The problem with this is that the search engines can quickly tell who links to each other so it’s a simple way to see who is trying to boost their own rank. Google and probably Yahoo too now penalize sites that have been involved in serious link exchanges. I’m talking about webmasters who have traded links with hundreds of other sites and who have complete link exchange directories on their sites. You will notice sites like this who have resources or link exchange pages that extend to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 pages.

Because this is so easily detectible by search engines it’s time to start doing link exchanges differently. Link exchanges are not going away, so the way links are exchanged has to well, change. Here are a couple of suggestions on doing link exchanges differently.

The Three Way

No, I’m not talking about anything sexual here silly. I’m talking about creating a 3 way link exchange where one of the two link partners has 2 sites and links to his or her partner via their second site instead of directly from their first. This requires one of the partners to have a second site preferably in another location with a different class-c IP. I’d even go as far as to say with a different person named as the domain registrant so the whois information doesn’t show the same info for sites 1 and 2.

This requires of course more resources on the part of the webmaster with 2 sites but it’s not uncommon for webmasters to own more then one site. Directories or information portals are types of sites you could use as your second site. They should contain useful and unique content as well and have incoming links from other related sites. To get a boost of Pagerank needed you will have to submit your site to other directories, maybe publish a press release, articles or even purchase a text link or two. Your second site should be well ranked and give your partners a good reason why they should exchange links via this method. Basically you want to create an Authoritative directory of sites in your niche.

The Blog Way

Blogs seem to have special powers on the web. I’ve seen blogs with blogrolls a mile long and I’ve never heard of a blogger being penalized for linking out too much. Blogs can be a great link exchange medium and you can see this from bloggers who again have long blogrolls and who have high Pagerank. Starting a second blog is actually easier then starting a second website to use to exchange links with. it’s free at blogger.com to start a blog and once you do it’s easy to manage and especially link out to your partners sites. Like the first method you want to create an authoritative resource on the niche you are trying to conquer.

I don’t recommend using blogger.com if you want to actually own your site. You can start a blog at blogger.com but you never really own your site. I would recommend using wordpress, drupal or typepad on your own domain, again hosted on a different host then your first site. When your blog is set up you can blog about your niche related news, discuss or rate other sites in your niche (giving you a perfect way to link to your partners) or simply place your partners in your blogroll list.

So now you have 2 sites in your niche, one you use as your main site and the other you use for exchanging links. This means you don’t have any link exchange pages on your main site, which is great, but what about your partners site? Does he/she have a huge link exchange directory on their site? You don’t really want your link hidden in one of their deep link pages do you? I pass up any link exchange offers made by webmasters who are so kind as to offer me a link on their links page located 3 subcategories deep on a page with 200 other sites.

Here is what you can do. Besides telling them they should scrap their entire link exchange section you can suggest they give you a spot outside their link pages by offering them a full page of content. If that’s too much maybe a paragraph of content including your link they can include on one of their main pages. Maybe a testimonial of sorts they can add to their site. Most webmasters trade links on pages that are similar in Pagerank so you will have to be willing to offer up their link on a page with equal or greater Pagerank.

The above methods are long term and are only suggested if you are serious about gaining one-way inbound links to your site. Although the work involved is great so is the reward.

SEO and Domain Age

Posted by | Uncategorized | 2 Comments

Google’s patent application 20050071741 displays how they rank sites on historical data.  Meaning that they pay attention to when your domain was registered and how long it’s been registered for.  Older domains have an advantage in Google’s serps over newer domains.  If you have a domain name and plan to be around for awhile then it’s good to register your domain for longer then the 1 year minimum.  I’d say register your domains for atleast 3 years in advance just to let Google know you are serious and plan to be around for awhile.  Most spam sites are only registered for 1 year then let expire so it’s good to set yourself apart from these domains by extending your registration.
Here is the Google Patent in full.  You will see #’s 38-40 pertain to a domains information.
38. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more types of history data includes domain-related information corresponding to domains associated with documents; and wherein the generating a score includes: analyzing domain-related information corresponding to a domain associated with the document over time, and scoring the document based, at least in part, on a result of the analyzing.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the scoring the document includes: determining whether the domain associated with the document is legitimate, and scoring the document based, at least in part, on whether the domain associated with the document is legitimate.

40. The method of claim 38, wherein the domain-related information is related to at least one of an expiration date of the domain, a domain name server record associated with the domain, and a name server associated with the domain.

An overview of the importance of domain age can be found in this article at webconfs.com.  I just extended jeffhendricksondesign.com until 2010.

Alexa Rankings are Useless

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Did you know you can artificially boost your Alexa traffic ranking by simply installing the Alexa toolbar and visiting your sites over and over?  Yes, it’s true.  Because of this fact I don’t trust Alexa rankings at all.  I never really thought Alexa was worth a damn even back in 2001 when I first personally heard of their toolbar.  Because it tracks the sites you visit some people consider it spyware.  But I don’t think that’s the big problem.  The problem comes when site owners or webmasters base the worth of their sites on their Alexa rankings.  To me Alexa rankings don’t mean jack.  I don’t know anyone who uses it and who are these people that do?  I first installed their toolbar back in early 2002 after all the buzz, but I thought, ok this is lame and uninstalled it.  You can read a good post titled “stop using alexa for serious traffic analysis” on makeyougohmm.com.
