I can’t express how much I’m in love with Typekit. It’s quite possible the best service to serve up some sweet new fonts on your website. I assume they’re the best as I really haven’t tried anyone else out. Well I did try embedding fonts using myfonts service, but the quality was bad… ie. the fonts are jagged and don’t look as smooth as Typekits.

I’ve had the joy of switching over the regular web fonts I have been using on this site to the magnificent Proxima Nova. I’ve played around with several other fonts but thought Proxima Nova looked the best. Of course I’ll probably change it up in the future but that’s what I’m using now.

I’ve also been using Typekit for a client as well as on some personal websites. You can see Proxima Nova at work on Midwest Heavy Haul’s website. They offer Heavy Haul services throughout the Midwest and I thought Proxima Nova worked well here too. I’m really not sure what it wouldn’t work on.

Midwestheavyhaul.com using Proxima Nova from Typekit

I’ve also been using it on WP Switch, which is a new site of mine that I recently bought. Still needs some work, but boy does it look better than it did.

I wish I had more time to implement Typekit across a few more of my sites but I’m going to wait to do full redesigns.

Typekit is a dream to work with and is super easy to implement if you haven’t tried it yet. Go sign up if you haven’t!

Piel Script is a new script font released by Studtipos font foundry that is perfect for tattoo lettering. Really digging the way this font looks. I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing this used not only for tattoos but in a lot of new collage/multi-media art real soon.

Here’s a word from Ale Paul the designer about Piel Script…

In a way, Piel Script is a removed cousin of Burgues Script. Although the initial sketches were infused with some 1930s showcard lettering ideas (particularly those of B. Boley, whose amazing work was shown in Sign of the Times magazine), most of the important decisions about letter shapes and connectivity were reached by observing whatever strengths and weaknesses can be seen in tattoos using Burgues. Tattoos using Adios also provided some minor input. In retrospect, I suppose Affair exercised some influence as well, albeit in a minor way. I guess what I’m trying to say is there is as much of me in Piel Script as there is in any of the other major scripts I designed, even though the driving vision for it is entirely different from anything else I have ever done.

If you’re a fan of Miami Ink, or LA Ink, or just tattoos you’ll love this.

What’s next in typography? HFJ reveals some very interesting info in one of their recently released talks by AIGA. Even though this talk was given in 2007 it is still very interesting to listen to if you want to know more about typography and how it affects us.

You can download the audio in MP3 format directly from AIGA here.

Most of the talks that we’ve given are lost to the sands of time, but this afternoon I was happy to discover that one of our favorite presentations lives on. For the AIGA Design Conference in Denver, we were asked to meditate on the topic of “What’s Next,” for which we presented a study of typographic history — and why the ‘historical revival’ might be a twentieth century idea whose time has passed.

The AIGA has posted the audio of our talk, which tracks with the images above; it runs about 45 minutes, including some questions from the audience, in which Tobias reveals some of the unpublished developmental names of Gotham. Also keep an ear out for two provocative concepts: a French wine scholar offers a pithy gloss on experimentalism, and a certain type designer defines “the underpants-on-the-head school of revivalism.”

If you find this interesting you can find a few more talks here

Curious as to what fonts to use for your next design for a web 2.0 design/logo?

The FontShop have put together a small list of web 2.0 logos and what fonts they have used in their design. Some are exact and some are similar fonts. They break the logos down into 3 categories, The Softies (A clear trend in new identities is the use of soft, rounded typefaces dominated by VAG Rounded (AKA Rundschrift), but also including Helvetica Rounded, Arial Rounded, Bryant, and FF Cocon.), The Futurists (reflecting the technological breakthroughs of Web 2.0 with a look that says “tomorrow’s techno”) and the Classics (Safe standbys like Trade and News Gothic, Frutiger, Avenir, Interstate, FF Meta, FF DIN, and the always ubiquitous Helvetica continue to see use in new web logos).

– A partial screen capture of just a small portion of Ludwig’s web 2.0 logo compilation of over 400 web 2.0 logos. Pretty impressive.
