Great post, I want to point out that in Satellite Site Set-Up Guideline #2 hiring freelancers is a good idea but I think this is where satellite sites could really benefit from some rss magic. No, not just putting up a popular feed, but many targetted feeds from your niche, maybe taking the top story from each.

I'm suggesting against using popular feeds or simply displaying 10 stories on one feed because the content already appears over-syndicated to search engines, careful or you get hit with a duplicate content slap. Take a story from 5 or 6 feeds and display them in a list? Much better idea.

Using your pet example above, one satellite site with pet food feeds one with pet medication feeds etc.

Can't be cookie cutter sites either, follow the authors advice and have at least 10 pages of unique content, the feeds I'm suggesting here are to suppliment that content.

Also consider freshness, you don't want to just leave these satellite sites up and forget about them. Google loves new content, the feeds can help with this.

Again, great article and I agree with pretty much everything you are saying here. I think you have inspired me to write a post on this subject.

We have been creating satellite sites for our main website for years now and each site concentrates on a particular country with unique content and indeed google ads throughout the sites.

In our experience satellite sites can be a great tool if implemented correctly as outlined above.

Good luck.
