Google recently launched click-to-play video ads, a new ad format for sites in the AdSense network. Video ads may appear on your site if you're opted into image ads for one of the three ad formats that support video ads: the Medium Rectangle (300 X 250), Large Rectangle (336 X 280), and Square (250 X 250).

When a video ad is served to a page, it will be displayed as a static opening image. Once the user clicks the play button or the opening image, the video will begin playing within the ad space. If the user clicks the display URL at the bottom of the ad, or clicks the ad while it's playing, the user will automatically be taken to the advertiser's website. Users can control the volume and can replay the video if they choose; the video will not automatically replay.

You can choose whether to enable or disable video ads from appearing on your pages.

How do I enable my pages to show Click-to-Play video ads?

If you'd like to display video ads, please ensure that you're using one of the three supported video ad formats on your site and that you are opted in to image ads for that specific ad unit.Note that as there is currently limited video ad inventory, you may not notice any ads on your site for some time. As our inventory grows, you may begin to see video ads appear on your pages. In the meantime, we recommend opting in to both text and image ads for your ads units to ensure you're getting the ads that represent the maximum revenue potential for you.

How do I prevent Click-to-Play video ads from appearing on my pages?

If you'd prefer not to display video ads on your site, there are a couple options available to you:

  • You can use your Competitive Ad Filter to block video ads from an individual advertiser.
  • You can opt out of image ads for the three ad formats that support video ads: Medium Rectangle, Large Rectangle, and Square.

Will You earn more with Click-to-Play video ads?

As with text and image ads, Google can't make any guarantees about the amount you'll earn from video ads. However, displaying video ads along with text and image ads on your site should lead to greater potential revenue. When you increase the pool of advertisers whose ads are eligible to display on your site, you'll increase competition for your ad space and drive your earnings up.Keep in mind that Google's system is optimized to display whichever ad or ads will generate the most revenue for you at all times. When they show a video ad on your site, it's because they've determined that it represents a higher value to you than the corresponding text or image ads that might otherwise run in that same ad space.

Can you play the videos of ads on your site as an Adsense Publisher?

You're can view the videos of ads on your site by clicking the Play button; clicks on the play button are not counted as clicks in your reports. Google only counts clicks that lead a user to the advertiser's site, including on the display URL or on the video while it's playing. So you won't get penalized for playing the videos on your own sites but make sure you don't click the url or video while it's playing.
