What’s next in typography? HFJ reveals some very interesting info in one of their recently released talks by AIGA. Even though this talk was given in 2007 it is still very interesting to listen to if you want to know more about typography and how it affects us.

Most of the talks that we’ve given are lost to the sands of time, but this afternoon I was happy to discover that one of our favorite presentations lives on. For the AIGA Design Conference in Denver, we were asked to meditate on the topic of “What’s Next,” for which we presented a study of typographic history — and why the ‘historical revival’ might be a twentieth century idea whose time has passed.

The AIGA has posted the audio of our talk, which tracks with the images above; it runs about 45 minutes, including some questions from the audience, in which Tobias reveals some of the unpublished developmental names of Gotham. Also keep an ear out for two provocative concepts: a French wine scholar offers a pithy gloss on experimentalism, and a certain type designer defines “the underpants-on-the-head school of revivalism.”

Lovin these new vectors from YWFT.

Just finished up on the new design of Caterpillarmanuals.com. They offer the world’s largest selection of Caterpillar Manuals (Note: domain has changed as well as the logo and design).  They currently offer over 3,000 different Cat manuals to choose from.  They offer Caterpillar parts manuals, service manuals and operator manuals for both new and old Caterpillar tractors.  Along with the new site I designed the logo, box art for the manuals as well as the actual manual covers.  You can see some of them below.

Some new work I’m doing for Super Deluxe, a live music band based in Charleston, SC.  They’re one of the best Charleston wedding bands around.  But they do more than just weddings, they’re available for any live events and have played around the US and Mexico.  I’ve designed the logo and am currently working on their website.  Should be completed by the end of March.  If you’re in the Charleston SC area and looking for a band for your event give them a call.  Wilton Elder who is on the bottom right in the black sweater is the sax player and the person who initiated the project and I can personally say he’s a Super dude to work with.

Paula Scher looks back at a life in design (she’s done album covers, books, the Citibank logo …) and pinpoints the moment when she started really having fun. Look for gorgeous designs and images from her legendary career.

Great design is a never-ending journey of discovery — for which it helps to pack a healthy sense of humor. Sociologist and surfer-turned-designer David Carson walks through a gorgeous (and often quite funny) slide deck of his work and found images.

I just finished up a book cover for K.C. Wilson titled Doing The Dead.  Check it out.

I found LiveSurface a few months back and I don’t even remember how I found them, but I’m glad I did.  What I wanted was a way to add my artwork to a magazine layout so it looked like I designed a magazine.  And I really wanted to do it without having to manually create the magazine in Photoshop and then apply my designs.
